She was born a gracious southern lady in Savannah, Georgia on September 22, 1933, to Malcolm Ernest Tootle and Merle Burroughs Tootle. Gwen grew up in Florence, South Carolina and was one of the "Florence Girls" known at the Beach for their beauty and their brains.
