If you’ve already started looking into EV chargers, you’ll probably recognize the big name JuiceBox and ChargePoint. They were amongst the first to come about, and their popularity is steadily growing.But the question is, which one to buy?

This impartial article is here to help you make the decision. I’ll compare and contrast the different features before rounding off with a conclusion at the end.

So let’s start by looking at what features they have in common before going into how they are different.

Common Features

Here’s what the JuiceBox and the ChargePoint Home Flex have in common:

• They use a standard J17772 connector which is compatible with almost all the EVs in North America
• You can use them hardwired or with either a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 plug
• There’s built-in cable storage
• They can be used both indoors and outdoors
• They are Wi-Fi enabled, allowing the use of apps to track or schedule charging
• They are UL listed, which means they meet safety standards
• They are Energy Star Certified, which means they are energy efficient
• They are both backed by a lengthy 3-year warranty

And those are certainly some great features. Some of these are a given for such high-end EV home chargers.

You can expect any home charger worth its salt to feature a standard J1772 connector, have some means of cable storage, and meet basic safety standards.

But some of these features are really something. Like the convenience of having both NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 plugs and being suitable for outdoor use should you ever need it.

And if your decision to go EV was born of eco-consciousness, you’ll also be very pleased that these chargers are certified as energy efficient. And the lengthy 3-year warranty is very reassuring.

So far, both of these home EV chargers are looking very good. And if you were going off just this information alone, you’d be in no place to judge which one of the two is the best for you. So that’s why we’re now going to look into the differences between the two.

Maximum Power

Whereas both chargers charge up at 240 volts, they differ in how many amps they charge at. The Enel X JuiceBox can charge at 32 or 40 amps, with a power of 7.6 or 9.6 kiloWatts, respectively.

But the ChargePoint Home Flex has a clear edge here, charging at 50 amps with a maximum power of 12 kiloWatts.

However, it’s worth noting at this point that the ChargePoint Home Flex’s 50 amps are only achievable if the device is hardwired, otherwise it will only achieve a maximum of 40 amps.

Cable Length

The JuiceBox comes with a charging cable that’s 25 feet long, which is long enough to wrap around your entire vehicle if, for whatever reason, you are not able to park so that you line up directly with the charging point.

The charging cable that comes with the ChargePoint model however, is two whole feet shorter, at 23 feet long. However, this shouldn’t really present much of a problem for ChargePoint users. But JuiceBox is the clear winner when it comes to cable length.

Charging Network

ChargePoint has a network of over a whopping 18,000 chargers across the whole US. Enel X, meanwhile, does not have any such away-from-home charging network.

So ChargePoint wins in this regard, but it’s not necessarily a deal-breaker regarding what charging station to get for your home.

Build Quality

JuiceBox is made right here in the USA, and many people in the US see that as a sign of good product quality. And I can confirm that the JuiceBox is of a good quality build.

It’s compact with an ergonomic handle and features a nice pivoting handle for storage.

But I would argue that the ChargePoint Home Flex has just as good a build quality. It feels both strong and robust.

Customer Service

When you’re dealing with new technology, it’s always good to have at least some sort of help at hand when using something you may not be too familiar with.

And to that end, Enel X provides customer service that’s available during standard business hours, Monday through Friday.

As for ChargePoint, they also offer technical support Monday through Friday during standard business hours. But, if you were to need more general assistance, you can access their general support, which is available not only Monday through to Friday but also on the weekends, with customer service accessible 24/7.

So ChargePoint is the clear winner here since issues can arise any day of the week at any time, not just during business hours.

Mobile App

Both home chargers feature an app that allows you to schedule your car charging from your smartphone, so you don’t even have to be at home to charge it.

Moreover, they can also allow you to track or monitor your vehicle’s charging via your smartphone app, thanks to its ability to access this data in real-time.

And that’s not all – both of these devices also work with Amazon Echo / Alexa, which means that you can set the car to charge your vehicle even when you don’t have your cellphone to hand or if you’re busy with your hands.

There’s no clear winner for this category – it’s a tie.

Cost and Value for Money

We’re not going to beat around the bush here. The truth is that the ChargePoint Home Flex is significantly more expensive than the Enel X JuiceBox. Even when the Juicebox is sold at the full listing price.

Some EV owners, however clearly believe that the ChargePoint offering is good value for money. And there are a lot of people who are buying it and leaving great reviews.

JuiceBox vs ChargePoint: Which One To Buy

I would argue that the ChargePoint Home Flex does have the edge over the Enel X JuiceBox in a few key areas, not that there’s much in it. However, you could save yourself a lot of money if you went with JuiceBox instead. And also get something made right here in America!
